The Friday 56

The Friday 56 is a bookish meme hosted by Freda’s Voice.

*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56.
*Find any sentence that grabs you.
*Post it.

Today’s sentence comes from Wilkie Collins’ The Moonstone, the father of all mystery and suspense novels.

“Before I could steal suddenly round the corner, as I had proposed, I heard lighter feet than mine-and more than one pair of them as I thought-retreating in a hurry.”

    1. Hi! Thanks for visiting my blog!

You’re welcome! The Moonstone is full of excitement. Any line from it would do perfectly but this one seemd a tad more exciting than the rest.

    1. Hi! Thanks for visiting my blog!

I re-read The Moonstone last year for an Author of the Month challenge. It was okay.

I read The Woman in White some seven years ago so my memory of it is a little hazy but remember loving the character of Marian Halcombe and loathing Count Fosco. He is one of the nastiest villains in Victorian literature in my opinion.

When I first read The Moonstone I loved the whole ambiance but didn’t really care for any of the main characters. When I re-read it last year thought my opinion would perhaps change. Well, it didn’t. Overall, I’ve got mixed feelings about the book.
