Day 23: Favourite Short Stories
The Kiss by Anton Chekhov and The Last Leaf by O’Henry .
I love reading short stories. I feel a writer who can put all the emotions that requires a whole book to play through in just a few pages deserves to be applauded. Only a really good writer is capable of doing that.
Both The Last Leaf and The Kiss are so heartbreakingly sad. These two remain the best short stories I’ve ever read. The elderly, penniless painter in The Last Leaf and the insignificant, unattractive little soldier Ryabovitch in The Kiss are two of my favourite ‘heroes’.
