Madame Thérèse Defarge from Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities.
In A Tale of Two Cities, the character of Ernest Defarge is a dull character. But his wife, Thérèse Defarge, is quite something else. As an unforgiving, bitter woman she is really chilling. Never taking her eyes off of her knitting, she manipulates the lives of the people around her most efficiently. Her thirst for vengeance and the cool and methodical way she sets out to destroy everyone is disturbing to say the least.
