Today’s sentence comes from It’s Only a Movie: Alfred Hitchcock – A Personal Biography by Charlotte Chandler. Here Hitchcock reminisces about the time his team became broke while shooting for The Pleasure Garden in Germany. Alma was his wife.
“Until a check arrived from London, we were dependent on the hospitality of our German friends, who saw to it that we lost no weight, unfortunately. Looking back at some snaps Alma took of me at that time, a bit of hunger might have done me some good.”
Cute 56, though I’d think not going hungry would take precedent over looks. Who knew he was a little shallow?! Thanks for participating.
Welcome!
I wouldn’t say he was shallow. It’s just that he had always been that fat kid or that fat guy. That shook his confidence in himself. It took him ages before he finally got enough courage to ask out his wife Alma as he was sure she was going to turn him down because of his weight. He was bound to be a little sensitive abut his weight issue. Going on diets seemed to be his favourite pastime.
I love memoirs, especially of celebrities and authors. Thanks for sharing.
Here’s MY FRIDAY MEMES POST and
MY WEBSITE
You’re welcome! This is a good memoir. Nothing really scandalous or non-flattering is said about Hitchcock but it does provide very thorough details of his work, which is what I really wanted from this memoir.
This sounds like a really interesting read!
Here are my Friday memes: http://myreadersblock.blogspot.com/2011/09/friday-memes_23.html
It is an interesting read! I picked up this book on a whim as I am not really a non-fiction reader. But the book is so entertaining! I am enjoying it very much.
At least, he had a sense of humor. All of the photos I’ve seen he looked really gloomy. Didn’t realize there is a book about him. He was a master talent.
Like I said in my previous comment, Hitchcock’s movies are dark but they always have an undercurrent of humour. He definitely had a sense of humour but most of the time it was bizzare and often kind of scary.
That is funny. I’ll have to look for this one, I love Hitchcock’s movies.
I like his movies too. Hitchcock’s movies are dark but they always have an undercurrent of humour. For me that’s what makes them even more disconcerting.
