Today’s sentence(s) comes from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, a book I have learnt to appreciate more as I’ve grown up.
“Enough House,” said I; “that’s a curious name, miss.”
“Yes,” she replied; “but it meant more than it said. It meant, when it was given, that whoever had this house could want nothing else. They must have been easily satisfied in those days, I should think…”
Great 56! Thanks for participating!
You’re welcome! 🙂
ahh, such a good classic. enjoy this one.
Yes it is a good classic! Glad you feel the same way too.
It’s been a long time since I read this. Can’t say I really appreciated it in high school. Maybe I’ll give it another try one of these days…..
Here’s my Friday post: http://myreadersblock.blogspot.com/2011/08/friday-memes.html
From what I understand a lot of people don’t really enjoy Great Expectations. It is not the usual Dickens fare. It is pretty dark when compared to some of his other works. The hero behaves like a jerk most of the book and the heroine, Estella, is one cold hearted ‘you know what’ if there ever was one. A re-read has made me understand this one much better now then I did a few years ago. 🙂
Wow, that is an intriguing excerpt. This is one Dickens that I missed….thanks for sharing.
Here’s MY FRIDAY MEMES POST
Thanks! Great Expectations is one of my favourite Dickens novels. I’d definitely recommend it.
It’s been years since I read it but I love this book. A great choice for this week’s 56!
Thanks! When I first read it I liked it but when I re-read it last year I appreciated its underlying themes much better. I love it too now.
